New Jersey Pride V. Baltimore Bayhawks August 4, 2001
Pride Takes Wind Out From Bayhawks Wings;
Gain Lead in National Division
Baltimore, MD - The New Jersey Pride traveled to Baltimore to take on the Bayhawks with revenge on their minds. In this critical National Division match-up with Baltimore, 7-3, holding a slim ½ game lead over the Pride, 6-3, New Jersey was looking to make amends for the trashing the Pride received from the Bayhawks earlier in the season, 14-7. In that game, Baltimore's Rob Doerr held Jesse Hubbard, the leading goal scorer in Major League Lacrosse with 30 goals, scoreless for the entire game. While the Baltimore defense managed to play well against Hubbard, holding him to only two goals, they could not handle the Pride's triple threat of Jon Hess, Scott Urick and David Curry who combined for 10 goals and seven assists in leading New Jersey to a 16-14 win.
Pride midfielder Drew Melchionni opened the scoring early on, after each team missed some tough shots, on a great feed from Jon Hess, Hess' first of four for the game. The Bayhawks answered with a goal from Thursday nights Major League LacrosseStar Game MVP, Mark Millon. With the score tied 2-2 Urick notched his first goal of four for the game and his 20th of the season. Urick scored his second goal of the game with seconds left in the first quarter, giving New Jersey a 4-3 lead at the end of one.
Mark Millon came out on fire to start the second quarter. Scoring his second goal of the game just :54 seconds into the quarter. Millon ended the half with four goals and one assist, but with goals by Jay Jalbert, Hubbard, Urick, and David Curry's first of four goals, the Pride led 8-6 going into the locker room at halftime.
Baltimore's Cattrano and Doerr
The Pride outscored the Bayhawks 4-2 in the opening minutes of the third quarter, paced by back-to-back goals from Jon Hess. With New Jersey leading 12-8, Millon scored his fifth goal of the game in the waning minutes of the third quarter. Although, the score brought Baltimore within three at 12-9, the goal marked the end of the Mark Millon show as the Pride defense made some great adjustments at halftime to shut him down. Curry added two goals to put New Jersey ahead 16-11 in the fourth quarter. The Bayhawks pulled to within two on a last minute two-point goal by Matt Shearer.
Urick and Curry led the Pride triple threat with four goals apiece and contributed two and one assists respectively. Hess quarterbacked the trio and upped his league leading assist total to 25 with four assists on the night. Hubbard's two goals increased his League leading total to 32.
The win catapulted the New Jersey Pride into first place in the National Division with a 7-3 record and a share of the best record in Major League Lacrosse with the Long Island Lizards. The Bayhawks fall to 7-4.
