The Baltimore Bayhawks got all they could handle from the Boston Cannons in the second semifinal of the first-ever MLL Championship Weekend at Kennedy Stadium in Bridgeport, Connecticut. The Boston Cannons 2001 season has been plagued by excruciating one-goal losses. It only seems fitting that the season ends in the same fashion. Baltimore beats Boston 12 to 11 to advance to the MLL’s Championship game.It was a tale of two halves for the Cannons. The Bayhawks outscored the Cannons 8 to 4 in the first half. Boston battled back in the second half to outscore Baltimore 7 to 4.
"I’m very proud of our guys. We came back and played a great second half against a very good (Baltimore) team. We’ve lost so many one-goal games this season. It hurts, but again I’m proud of the heart of our team," said Mitch Whiteley, Cannons head coach.David Evans and Tucker Radebaugh led the scoring for the Cannons with three goals apiece. Mike Battista and Scott Doyle added goals for Boston.

"We played hard and got on track offensively in the second half. We had a few mental lapses in the first half; if we could’ve gotten started earlier, it might have been a different outcome," said Evans.Baltimore’s offensive attack was very balanced. Nine different Bayhawks scored goals. Tom Marachek and Greg McCavera led the way for Baltimore with two apiece.

Cannons goaltender Bill Daye was superb between the pipes. As has been the case all season, Daye was called upon to keep the Cannons in the game and he did just that. On more than one occasion Daye made several spectacular saves in a row.
"I felt good out there today. But the most important thing is winning the game and we just came up short. I think the whole team played with great heart. I think we surprised a lot of people who thought this game would be a rollover," said Daye.As has been the story for most of the season, the Cannons started the game slowly. Boston trailed Baltimore 5 to 3 at the end of the first quarter. Tucker Radebaugh had two goals to lead the Cannons in the first.

The scoring pace slowed in the second quarter. Only four total goals were scored, but unfortunately for the Cannons, three were by the Bayhawks. The Cannons went into halftime trailing Baltimore 8 to 4.The game remained a defensive struggle in the third quarter. The Cannons outscored Baltimore 3 to 1. Both teams exchanged great defensive plays and big hits throughout the quarter. Daye was spectacular in third, making several great saves.
The Bayhawks Gavin Prout was drafted #1 in the NLL
Baltimore will play Long Island in the MLL Championship game, Monday September 3, at 1:00pm, at Kennedy Stadium, Bridgeport CT.
