Hoyas Get First-Ever Win
over Maryland, 10-6

#1 Georgetown pulls away in the second half

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The University of Maryland women’s lacrosse team lost, 10-6, to the No. 1 Georgetown Hoyas in a rematch of the 2001 NCAA championship game on a cold and windy night at Ludwig Field. The loss was the first ever to the Hoyas in 12 meetings between the two teams.

The Terps (6-5, 0-3 ACC) got on the board first, using a deliberate approach and crisp passing that ultimately paid off in a quick-hitter by Annie Collins after a nice feed from Kelly Coppedge from behind the cage. The Hoyas then answered with a pair of goals to claim the lead and it was a bit of a see-saw affair for the remainder of the first half.

Georgetown took a two-goal lead in the half on a Gloria Lozano goal with 16 seconds remaining, but Courtney Hobbs answered back off of a feed from Sonia Judd with seven seconds left and the Terps went into the intermission down just 5-4.

The second half began as the first did, with Maryland scoring first. Hobbs scored on a free position shot just over five minutes in, and the Terps looked like they would make a game of it. The tie didn’t last long, however, as Erin Elbe continued to use the hard-charging style that worked so well against the Terrapins in last year’s title game to score a pair of goals and assist on another in a three-goal Hoya run. Maryland answered on an unassisted goal by Coppedge to cut the deficit to 8-6 with 12:29 left, but Wick Stanwick’s goal almost seven minutes later sent the deficit back to three.

From that point on, Georgetown put the defensive clamps on the Terrapins, holding them to just three shots in the final 12 minutes and successfully running clock when in their offensive set.

For the game, Maryland was led in scoring by Coppedge who had a pair of goals and an assist. Hobbs added a pair of goals while Judd added a goal and an assist. Elbe led all scorers with five points (four goals, one assist) while Stanwick added a hat trick and an assist.

The Terrapins return to action this Saturday as it will travel to Harrisonburg, Va., to take on the Dukes of James Madison. Opening draw is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Georgetown faces #4 North Carolina on Sunday.
