US Team claims inaugural title as North American indoor lacrosse champs
(MISSISSAUGA, October 7, 2002) - Team USA defeated Team Canada 21-16 in the inaugural Heritage Cup, claiming North American supremacy in the indoor version of lacrosse. The match, featuring professional National Lacrosse League all-stars playing for their respective countries, was held Saturday, October 5, at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga before 3800 lacrosse enthusiasts.
Scoring for the American team were: Jake Bergey (5 goals), Mike Regan (4 goals), Kevin Finneran (4 goals), Jay Jalbert (3 goals), Tim Soudan (1 goal), Jamie Hanford (1 goal), Tom Ryan (1 goal), Chris Panos (1 goal) and Brian Reese (1 goal).
Scoring for the Canadian team were: John Grant from Peterborough (4 goals), Dan Stroup from Vancouver, B.C. (3 goals), John Tavares from Toronto (3 goals), Colin Doyle from Kitchener (2 goals), Tracey Kelusky from Peterborough (1goal), Jim Veltman from Stouffville (1 goal), Gary Gait from Victoria, B.C. (1 goal) and Dan Teat from Toronto (I goal).
MVP awards went to Jake Bergey of the Philadelphia Wings for Team USA, and John Grant of the Rochester Knighthawks for Team Canada. The Heritage Cup was a prelude to the World Indoor Lacrosse Championships to be held May 14 to 24, 2003 in various community 'hotbeds' of lacrosse throughout Southern Ontario. Six countries thus far are scheduled to compete.
