POWER CLINCH DIVISION
Paul Gait Farewell Tour Continues


The Washington Power clinched the Eastern Division title with Saturday's 19-12 win over the Philadelphia Wings at the Capital Centre.

Although it is possible for the Wings to finish with the same record as Washington, the Power win the division based on the better division record.

Kip Fulks jump-started the Power offense with goals at 53 seconds and 3:54 of the opening period. Gary Gait made the score 3-0 at 6:09, off the third of brother Paul's seven assists.




A goal and two assists by Ryan Traynor helped the Wings stay within striking distance at 5-3 through one quarter, and unanswered tallies by Tom Marechek (1:43), Jeff Ratcliffe (3:13, 3:41) and Tom Slate (6:14) gave Philadelphia their only lead of the game.

The 7-5 advantage was short-lived, however, as the Power exploded for four goals in a 1:21 span and 10 in the last 7:32 of the half. Matt Shearer led the charge with a power play tally at 7:28 and even-strength goals at 8:03, 10:00 and 11:53. Bob Horsey and Josh Sims rocked goalie Chris Sanderson with goals at 8:35 and 8:49, and Brian Reese added a tally at 13:07.

The Power finished the quarter with a flurry of three goals, by Del Halladay at 14:00 and Paul Gait at 14:35 and 14:51 to leave Washington with an insurmountable 15-7 edge.

Paul Gait was the game's high scorer with six goals and seven assists. Matt Shearer scored four times, Gary Gait finished with two goals and four assists, and Paul Cantebene dished off for five goals.


Philly's Tom Ryan

Ratcliffe, who scored nine times against Ottawa last weekend, collected another four goals against the Power. Tom Marechek also scored four, and Kevin Finneran contributed five assists.

Both goalies, Washington's Devin Dalep and Philadelphia's Chris Sanderson, finished with 33 saves as the Power outshot the Wings 52-45.
