FRYE LEADS BAYHAWKS TO FOURTH STRAIGHT WIN, 13-12
BALTIMORE, Md. – Baltimore midfielder Mark Frye scored two goals in the fourth quarter, including the game-winner with 23 seconds left, to lead the Bayhawks (4-1) to their fourth straight win, a 13-12 Major League Lacrosse (MLL) victory over the Long Island Lizards at Homewood Field on Saturday night. With the score tied at 8-8 after the third quarter, Frye scored two of Baltimore’s five goals in the period to pull away for the narrow victory over the American Division rival.
The Lizards took a 1-0 lead just 53 seconds into the opening quarter, as midfielder Jay Jalbert scored off a feed from rookie attackman Kevin Lowe. Baltimore tied the game with 8:02 left in the period on a goal by attackman Mark Millon. Attackman John Blatchley was credited with the assist.Long Island countered with back-to-back goals from attackman Tim Goettelmann and Jalbert to take the 3-1 advantage with 4:39 left in the period.
After the Bayhawks and the Lizards traded goals, Baltimore scored a pair of goals, including a two-point goal by midfielder/attackman Brian Langtry, to take a 5-4 lead with 9:48 remaining in the second quarter. The goal was Langtry’s first as a Bayhawk after being obtained in a trade with Bridgeport prior to the MLL Collegiate Draft in late May.Jalbert scored his third goal of the game off a feed from former Johns Hopkins University midfielder Conor Denihan with 8:55 left in the period to tie the game at 5-5.
With 6:15 left in the first half, midfielder and Bayhawks’ Player-Coach Gary Gait gave the Bayhawks a 6-5 cushion with the first of his three goals on the evening. Baltimore upped its lead to 7-5 with a goal from midfielder Jeff Sonke with 1:13 remaining in the period.Jalbert, who was acquired in a trade from New Jersey during this off-season, cut the Bayhawk lead to 7-6 with his fourth goal of the game that was assisted by defenseman Matt O’Kelly. The Jalbert goal started a 3-0 Lizard rally that turned the two-goal deficit into an 8-7 advantage for visiting Long Island with 8:45 left in the third quarter. Goettelmann scored the other two goals in the rally.
Gait, the MLL Offensive Player of the Week, tied the game at 8-8 with an unassisted goal at the 2:45 mark of the period, which began a 3-0 Baltimore spurt of its own and created a 10-8 lead for the Bayhawks. Attackman Tom Marechek and midfielder Kip Fulks scored unassisted markers in the run.Denihan cut the Lizard deficit to 10-9 with 10:30 left and Haugen tied the game on a feed from Lowe with 9:11 remaining in regulation.
With 6:42 left in the game, Frye scored the first of his two goals to break the 10-10 stalemate and Gait followed with a Jude Collins assisted goal with 3:30 left, upping the Baltimore lead to 12-10.In the final minute of regulation, Long Island tied the game on goals by Haugen with 49 seconds left and by Jalbert with 33 seconds left.
With the game tied at 12-12, Frye took a pass from Gait and drove to the middle of the field, firing a shot past Long Island goalkeeper Brian Dougherty to score the eventual game-winner.“We were just going to try to get it to the short,” Frye said. “I just happened to have the short. It wasn’t really planned that way.”
“Gary just gave it to me and I just tried to make a run to get to the middle of the field and get a look at the goal”Dougherty made 12 saves in the goal for the visiting Lizards, while Baltimore’s Greg Cattrano stopped 16 Long Island shots in recording his fourth win of the season in a defensive battle.
“Both goalies made great saves,” Gait said. “These are the two best goalies on the two best teams in professional lacrosse. What more could you ask for?”
Frye, who has now scored seven goals in the Bayhawks’ last three games, was named the Bud Light Game MVP for his game-winning heroics.ACTION VIDEOS
