GAIT LEADS B'HAWKS IN
14-13 WIN OVER NEW JERSEY

BALTIMORE, Md. – Baltimore Bayhawks midfielder and Player-Coach Gary Gait scored four goals and assisted on two others to lead the Bayhawks (6-3, 3-0 National Division) to a 14-13 Major League Lacrosse (MLL) victory over the New Jersey Pride (5-3, 2-2) at Homewood Field on Saturday evening.

With the win, the Bayhawks snap a two-game losing skid and sweep the regular season series from their National Division rivals. Baltimore also ended the Pride’s five-game win streak in the one-goal victory.

New Jersey rookie midfielder Austin Garrison got the Pride the early 1-0 lead with an unassisted goal with 13:53 left in the opening stanza. The Pride extended the advantage to 2-0 just 45 seconds later on a goal by midfielder Chris Malone. Baltimore cut the deficit to 2-1 with the first of four goals from attackman Mark Millon. The leading scorer in MLL this season, Millon upped his lead in the scoring race over Rochester’s Casey Powell to six. Millon has 53 points on the season, while Powell currently is in second place with 47 points.

Midfielder Don Chemotti padded the Pride lead back to two at 3-1 with an unassisted goal past Baltimore starter Greg Cattrano with 11:01 remaining in the period.

Baltimore turned the 3-1 deficit to a 5-3 lead with four unanswered goals over the final six minutes of the first quarter. Attackman Tom Marechek scored the first of his two goals to start the run and was followed by an unassisted goal by midfielder Jeff Sonke with 3:47 left. Midfielder Josh Sims gave the Bayhawks their first lead at 4-3 with an unassisted goal before Millon ended the first quarter scoring with his second goal of the night with 40 seconds left in the period.

New Jersey’s David Curry narrowed the host Bayhawk lead to 5-4 with a power play goal at the 10:27 mark of the second period, which was assisted by attackman Jesse Hubbard.

Gait found Millon for his third goal of the half with 9:14 remaining in the second stanza before scoring back-to-back goals, upping the Baltimore lead to 8-4 at the end of the first half.

New Jersey began the second half with a 3-0 run, cutting the deficit down to one at 8-7. Hubbard received a pass from attackman Jon Hess, scoring his first goal of the game with 13:11 left in the third period on a Pride power play. Midfielder Greg Traynor narrowed the Bayhawk margin to 8-6 with an unassisted goal with 10:11 left in the period before Curry and Garrison teamed up to beat Cattrano, making it a one-goal game with 8:30 left in the third period.

Millon started a Baltimore 4-0 run with his fourth goal of the game off a Paul Cantabene assist, which was followed by a Gait tally past Pride starting netminder Trevor Tierney with 4:56 left in the period. The goal came off a Baltimore power play after Hubbard was called for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.

Midfielder Mark Frye ended the Bayhawks spurt with his fourth two-point goal of the season, setting a Bayhawks team record for two-pointers in a season. His tally with 2:14 left in the period gave Baltimore a commanding 12-7 lead going into the final 15 minutes of play.

The Pride, who had won their last five games after starting the season with consecutive losses to Boston and the Bayhawks, started the fourth quarter with a 3-0 spark of their own, which started on a Curry goal. That goal was followed by markers by attackman Scott Urick and midfielder Joe Ghedina to narrow the margin to 12-10.

Gait and Marechek gave the Bayhawks a four-point cushion with back-to-back goals before the Pride made their valiant comeback.

With 1:45 left in regulation, Urick scored to cut the lead to 14-11 before Traynor scored an unassisted two-point goal. With the score at 14-13 in favor of the Bayhawks, Marechek was called for a slash with less than a minute left, but New Jersey was unable to convert the final power play, giving the Bayhawks a much needed win.

Gait was named the Bud Light Game MVP after scoring the four goals with two assists. Defenseman Jamie Hanford was named the New Balance Sportsman of the Game after holding Hubbard to the single power-play goal in the one-goal victory.

Baltimore avoided the first three-game losing streak in team history and regains first place in the National Division, leading the Pride by one-half game with three games to play. Including last week’s loss to Bridgeport, Baltimore has been out of first place for just two weeks in the three seasons of MLL play.

Tierney made 12 saves in the goal for the Pride, while Cattrano recorded 20 saves in the winning effort. He has recorded 20 or more saves in back-to-back weeks after making 25 stops in the loss to the Barrage last week.

Baltimore returns to the road on Saturday, traveling to Boston to face the Cannons in the rubber game of the three-game regular-season series. Baltimore took the first meeting in overtime by 17-16 before losing to the Cannons by 11-10 two weeks ago.

New Jersey returns to Commerce Bank Ballpark to face the Long Island Lizards next Saturday evening at 5:30 p.m.
