Old Mr. Boh Repeats at Florida GM Tourney Washington Old Mr. Boh ("Old Bohemian Beer") repeats and wins the Weston, Florida Second Annual Garndmasters Tournament. Washington, organized by Bob Musitano took it to the HouNDs last year and this year ran up a surprising lead in the first half against a solid tournament hosting team, the FROGS ("Florida Real Old Guys"), and then held off a late charge to win 7-4. This year's tournament seeded last year's inaugural teams, Washington, FROGS, HouNDs and the Eagles, and with a 10-team field, two teams advanced from the initial opening round. Weston is fast becoming a popular Grandmasters tournament whcih will be spoken in the same breath as Placid and Vail in the next few years. The Stingers, a well known Baltimore area opened the tournament on Friday with a loss to Ray Mills and Mike Fisher's USA Stars, the World Grandmasters Champions from Perth, 10-6. OWU (Ohio Wesleyan University) Legends lost in overtime to a gritty High peaks team (Rochester, NY) 8-6 in a game in whcih the Peakers always seemed to find a way to tie and then sneak ahead. Two goals in the second overtime period (international rules) shut down the Legends effective. The Paladins lost to a resilient Eagles team, coached by Bob Dipuppo, who played phenomenally in the net, 8-6. The host team, the FROGS, jumped on touch of Gray early and also withstood a late charge to prevail 11-7. The Stars then took advantage of a bad third quarter and take the HouNDs 9-5 behind the 5 goal performance of Dave Megia. High Peaks could find no energy to run with Mr Boh and lost 16-9 to end the Friday round. On Saturday, High peaks opened against the HouNDs and tied them with 14 seconds left to send the game into overtime. Both teams notched goals in the first OT period, but the second period was all HouNDs, who placed one in the net to take the victory 9-8. Ken Piestrasko had 23 saves in the net for the HouNDs. The Stingers lost their second game of the tourney, letting the Paladins keep a slight margin throughout game and falling 11-9. OWU was unable to get its first tourney win as they ran into an explosive Touch of Gray attack to lose 13-7. In the semifinal matchups, Mr. Boh had some initial problems with the eagles, but disposed of them 9-6, while the FROGS jumped all over the Stars in the first half 7-1 and prevailed 11-3. OWU opened the play on Sunday morning and took its only win home over the Stingers 10-6, while the Paladins piled in the nets of High Peaks 13-3. The HouNDs were slow on the D-line and were dismantled by Touch of Gray 17-3. The Eagles took third place with a close 7-5 victory over the Stars and Mr. Boh relied upon its scoring in the first half to withstand a too little, too late second half assault from the FROGS and prevailed 7-4. |
