WASHINGTON, D.C. – Georgetown’s Jordan Vettoretti (Sr., Carmel, N.Y./
Mahopac) faked once and put in a point blank shot off of a Walid Hajj (Jr., Baltimore, Md./ McDonogh) pass with 2:19 remaining in overtime to defeat the 8th ranked Blue Devils Sunday on Harbin Field in front of 1,801 fans. The win advanced the #5/6 Hoyas’ record to 5-0 (2-0 ECAC), while Duke’s record falls to 6-3.
Duke took advantage of an early extra-man situation to take a 1-0 lead. The lead would be short lived, however, as midfielder Andy Corno (So., Bethesda, Md./ Walt Whitman) took the ensuing face-off straight down the field for an unassisted goal. From that point on, Hoya goalie Rich D’Andrea (So., Belle Mead, N.J./ The Peddie School) settled down, and Georgetown’s offense picked up as the Hoyas built a 4-2 lead on a goal by Mike Boynton (Jr., Fairport, N.Y./ Fairport) and two goals from Hajj. The Hoyas gave up a late goal 34 seconds before halftime and took a 4-3 lead into the break.
The Blue Devils seemed to take control in the second half, scoring two straight goals to take a one-goal lead late into the fourth quarter. They could not hold on though as GU’s Mike Hammer (Sr., Fairfax, Va./
Robinson) converted a Vettoretti pass to tie the game with 5:53 in the fourth. Both teams missed scoring opportunities towards the end of regulation, setting the stage for the Hoyas’ OT triumph.
A great face-off battle: Andy Corno and Kevin Cassese
Georgetown was marred by penalties throughout the game, committing six to Duke’s three. Two of those penalties led to extra-man goals for Duke. The Hoyas did out-shoot the Blue Devils 44-37, and Corno dominated the face-off circle, winning nine of the game’s 14 face-offs.
Georgetown’s next action is on Sunday, March 30 at ECAC foe Navy for a noon face-off.
