WASHINGTON, D.C. – With a dominating third quarter effort Saturday in which Georgetown (2-0, 1-0) potted five goals and kept Penn State (1-2, 0-1) off the scoreboard, the Hoyas started the ECAC men’s lacrosse schedule with a victory, winning 11-9 on Kehoe Field.

Despite some unlucky bounces Georgetown kept pace with a patient Penn State offense, falling behind 6-5 at the half before storming out to take the lead less than seven minutes into the third quarter. In the third Georgetown scored five goals, including two from Mike Hammer (Fairfax, Va./Robinson) and Phil Vincenti (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Brother Rice) while the defense held the Nittany Lions to just four shots, two on goal.

Penn State made a game of it late in the fourth but the Hoyas held fast to claim their first ECAC victory of the season. Walid Hajj (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) led the Georgetown offensive early, scoring a career-high four goals, including a natural hat-trick only 17 minutes into the contest.

Faceoff specialist Andy Corno Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) won 15 of 20 draws for the Hoyas, also adding a goal late in the second quarter. Senior defender Pat Collins (Mountainside, N.J./Delbarton) helped anchor the defense, forcing numerous turnovers and delivering big hits in the Hoya end.

Hajj opened the scoring at 7:06 of the first but Penn State replied with two tallies of its own. The Hoyas tied it up before two more quick strikes in the final minute of the quarter put the Nittany Lions up 4-2. Georgetown cut the deficit to one goal at the half before coming out strong to dominate the third. Up four heading into the fourth quarter, Neal Goldman (Ellicot City, Md./Mount Hebron) scored the first tally to extend the margin but Penn State’s determined offense scored thrice, including a man-up marker with 48 seconds remaining to bring the game to an 11-9 finale.

Georgetown outshot PSU 56 to 29 but Lions’ goaltender Chris Garrity made 22 saves to keep his team in the game. The Hoyas also dominated face-offs, winning 74% of the draws.
