#6 Hoyas Handle #8 Rutgers in Men’s Lacrosse, 8-4

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Georgetown University’s #6 ranked men’s lacrosse program defeated #8 Rutgers, 8-4, at Harbin Field on Saturday afternoon in ECAC League play. The Hoyas improve to 10-1 and 4-1 in the ECAC and Rutgers falls to 9-4 and 2-2 in league action.

Georgetown struck first in the game with two goals in the first five minutes. Trevor Walker (Haverford, Pa./ Episcopal Academy) started the goal scoring for the Hoyas 1:46 into the game. Two minutes later Walid Hajj (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) added another goal to give the Hoyas an early 2-0 lead. However, Rutgers would come back to tie the game at the 6:55 mark of the first period. Tim White would score first for the Knights off a feed from Jaime Lovejoy. Then an unassisted goal from Matthew Apel leveled the count at 2-2. With less than four minutes left, the Hoyas struck again with a goal from Jordan Vettoretti (Carmel, N.Y./ Mahopac), his first of three on the day.

The second stanza saw a drought of goals for 13 minutes, until Rutgers attacker Delby Powless tied the score at 3-3 with 2:47 left. That tie would not last, as Phil Vincenti (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Brother Rice) took a pass from Neal Goldman (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) with 1:14 remaining and gave GU a 4-3 halftime lead.

In the second half, Georgetown was able to pull away from the Scarlet Knights and secure a victory. Less than two minutes into the third period, Mike Hammer (Fairfax, Va./Robinson) scored an unassisted goal. A beautiful pass across the goalmouth from Keith Schroeder (Summit, N.J./ Summit), with 6:44 in the third, gave Vettoretti an open net and the Blue and Gray had a 6-3 margin. RU’s Matthew Apel would score his second goal of the game with 4:49 to narrow the gap after 45 minutes to 6-4.

Georgetown’s defensive combination of Brant Gresham (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan), Pat Collins (Mountainside, N.J./Delbarton), Andrew Braziel (Cape Elizabeth, Maine/Cape Elizabeth), Kyle Sweeney (Springfield, Pa./Springfield), Brodie Merrill (Orangeville, Ontario/Salisbury School (Conn.)) and goalie Rich D’Andrea (Belle Mead, N.J./The Peddie School) pitched a shutout in the fourth period holding Rutgers to its lowest goal output of the season. GU’s offense added two security goals, one from Goldman and Vettoretti’s hat trick score.

D’Andrea had 9 saves on the day and made a number of outstanding saves including a great mid-air snag of a ball being passed across the goal, after a failed attempt to clear by the Hoya defense. Rutgers Greg Havalchak made 12 stops on the day, while recording eight goals against.

Georgetown travels to Maryland on Monday, April 28 at 7 p.m. for a showdown at Byrd Stadium. The Hoyas then return home to battle Syracuse on Saturday, May 3 at 1 p.m. on Harbin Field.
