Record Day Includes Mayer's Five Goals
WASHINGTON, DC - George Washington women's lacrosse enjoyed a banner day versus visiting Stony Brook as sophomore Heidi Mayer scored a single-game record five goals and six points, and the team set a single-game record in goals scored with 19 in a 19-6 rout of Stony Brook.
GW (2-2) and SBU (2-1) traded goals early in the first half, and the Colonials held a 4-3 advantage with 11:04 on the clock. GW blew the match open before the break, scoring four-straight goals to take an 8-3 lead into the half. Mayer and freshman Lauren Bower accounted for four of the goals, as the teammates scored two apiece.
GW's Jen Morris
Mayer scored her third goal just 25 seconds into the second half to put the Colonials up by six, 9-3. The Seawolves answered with a goal by Marrisas Trachtenberg less than a minute later at 28:38, but that would be SBU's only goal for another 24 minutes as GW would score nine unanswered goals in over that period of time.
Head coach Jen Morris substituted liberally in the second half, as 10 different players scored at least one goal on the way to a team-record, 19 scores. The previous mark was 15 goals, set last season versus Howard on April 10, 2002. Mayer also recorded an assist, which broke the single-game record of five previously held by junior Jacqueii Arfaa.
Stony Brook's Danie Caro
Bower recorded four points with three goals and an assist, while fellow freshman Colleen Schmidt scored two goals and added an assist. Sophomore Megan McDonough rounded out the leaders with a pair of assists and a goal.
Stony Brook Assistant Meghan McNamara
SBU was led by Trachtenberg who scored three goals with one assist and Danielle Werner who recorded two assists and a goal.
