POWLESS SCORES GAME-WINNER IN OT

TOWSON, MD – Junior transfer Delby Powless (Hagersville, Ontario) scored a goal off a pass from senior co-captain Ken Springer (Ridgewood, NJ) 56 seconds into overtime to give Rutgers (1-0) a 10-9 victory against No. 13 Towson (0-1) in the season opener for both teams. Powless, playing in his first game as a Scarlet Knight, scored four goals in the game, while Springer contributed three. Rutgers never trailed in the game.

Rutgers freshman goalie Greg Havalchak (Corning, NY) had an outstanding game in his collegiate debut, saving 20 shots, as Towson out-shot the Scarlet Knights 65-28 in the game.

Powless scored the first goal of the game with 10:46 remaining in the first quarter. Junior Matt Apel (Bridgewater, NJ) assisted the goal as he went on to dish out a career-high four assists. Apel scored his first goal of the season just under five minutes later to give Rutgers a 2-1 lead, after Alex Fountain scored for the Tigers. Springer then found the back of the net to give Rutgers a 3-1 lead after the first quarter.

The Scarlet Knights tallied another three goals in the second quarter, from the sticks of Springer, Powless and freshman Devon Britts (Scottsville, VA) to go into halftime with a 6-3 lead.

Rutgers started the third quarter strong, outscoring Towson 3-1 over the first 6:40 to take a 9-4 lead. However, the Tigers scored the final five goals in regulation for force overtime, including outscoring RU 3-0 in the fourth quarter.

Sophomore John Flanagan (Smithtown, NY) won the draw to start the overtime. After a timeout Springer found Powless in the middle. Powless underhanded a rocket past the Towson goalie from 12 yards out to end the contest.

Sophomore Leif Blomquist (Long Beach, NY) dished out a career-high three assists to help the Scarlet Knights to victory.

Rutgers will open its home schedule on Wednesday, February 26, against Manhattan. The game is scheduled to begin at 3:00 on the Rutgers Stadium Turf Field.
