Syracuse Wins Big Over Loyola, 17-6
BALTIMORE (April 5)--Michael Powell and Sean Lindsay each scored three goals and No. 4 Syracuse led 9-1 at halftime and 16-3 after three quarters on the way to a 17-6 victory over No. 11 Loyola in a men's lacrosse game played before 3,922 at Curley Field Saturday afternoon.Powell had a goal and two assists in the game's first 20 minutes as the Orangemen (6-2) scored the first six goals of the game. Lindsay, Steve Vallone and Liam Banks then scored goals in a 1:52 span late in the second quarter to help Syracuse to a 9-1 halftime lead.
Roy Simmons, Jr. in the Radio BoothThe Orangemen then ended any hope of a Loyola (5-3) comeback early in the second half, scoring four times in the first 3:34 of the half, including two goals from Lindsay, to take a 13-2 lead. Syracuse led 17-3 early in the fourth quarter after a Zack Wallace goal before the Greyhounds scored the game's final three goals.
Mike PowellPat Shek led Loyola, which lost consecutive games at Curley Field for the first time since the 1985 season, with two goals. The 17-6 defeat was Loyola's biggest at home since a 17-5 loss to North Carolina in 1987 and its biggest overall since a 19-8 loss to Maryland in the 1998 NCAA semifinals.
a scary momentMichael Springer, Brian Nee, Banks and Vallone each added two goals for Syracuse, which fashioned its biggest win over Loyola since the 1990 NCAA championship game (21-9). The Orangemen outshot the Greyhounds 39-28, including 21-12 in the decisive first half.
Stephen BrundageGunnar Goettelmann, Stephen Brundage, Jim Fink and Rayland Baxter also scored goals for Loyola, which was held off the scoreboard until Fink's man-up goal with 8:16 left in the second quarter. The Orangemen then scored five straight goals after that, however, and scored four in a row in the third quarter after Goettelmann made the score 11-2 with 2:02 gone in the second half.
Mike SpringerPowell added a game-high four assists for Syracuse, which won at Curley Field for the first time since the 1995 season. Banks and Springer each had two assists. Syracuse goalie Jay Pfeifer had eight saves in a strong performance before being replaced by Nick Donatelli midway through the third quarter.
A nice crowdLoyola did win 16 of the game's 27 faceoffs, including 11 of 15 in the second half. The Greyhounds allowed their most goals in a game since falling to Towson by a 19-14 score in March 2001.
