TIGERS DOWN HOFSTRA 15-8

TOWSON, Md. - Towson never trailed and used an 8-1 run to open things up in the second half as the Tigers downed Hofstra 15-8 Friday night in a Colonial Athletic Association contest.

The win, Towson’s third in a row, improved the 13th-ranked Tigers to 4-3 on the season and enabled them to keep their CAA slate clean with a 3-0 mark, giving them a leg up in the league race. The loss dropped the 13th-ranked Pride to 5-4 and 1-1 in the conference. It was Towson’s third win over Hofstra in the last four meetings between the two CAA rivals but the Pride still lead the series, 18-13.

Todd Spear got Towson going with a goal off a Brad Monaco feed just 2:30 into the contest. Spear went on to score a team and career high three goals. Monaco finished with a game high three assists.

Long stick defenseman Adam Baxter tallied on a full field clear and then Brian Myers scored unassisted to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead before Joe Kostolansky got the Pride on the scoreboard with 4:20 to play in the first quarter. But Zak Smith got the goal right back for Towson just six seconds later when he scored after winning the ensuing faceoff. Kostolansky tallied on a man up goal and John Kyesor added another Pride goal to pull Hofstra to within one, 4-3, with 13:38 left in the second quarter. After Spear scored his second goal Kostolansky answered on another extra man opportunity as the Pride trailed 5-4.

But Myers scored what seemed to be a back breaker when he beat Hofstra goalkeeper Matthew Southard with just one second left in the half for a 6-4 Towson lead.

The Tigers went on a scoring spree for the next 26 minutes using an 8-1 run to sprint to a 15-6 lead. The Pride went scoreless for 16 minutes during Towson’s run.

Twelve different players scored for the Tigers, who outshot the Pride 43-35.

Towson keeper Reed Sothoron made 10 saves before being relieved late in the game. Smith helped Towson with a goal, an assist, nine ground balls and an 11-3 showing on faceoffs. Southard had 11 stops for the Pride.

The Tigers are back in action again Wednesday night when they host UMBC on Minnegan Field in Towson Stadium at 7:00 p.m. The Pride travel to Fairfield for a 5:30 non-conference game on Tuesday night.
