FIORE LEADS MINUTEMEN TO LEAGUE WIN

BALTIMORE, Md. - Chris Fiore (Freeport, N.Y.) scored a hat trick and UMass overcame a sluggish start to defeat a pesky Maryland-Baltimore County team, 11-8, in ECAC lacrosse action on Saturday. The win moves UMass' record to 8-1 overall and 2-1 in the ECAC.

The Minutemen struggled early, failing to record a shot in the first 10 minutes of the game while only managing two possessions against a tight UMBC defense. The Retrievers went up 2-0 on goals by Scott Steele and Phil Grillo four minutes into the game, but UMass cut the lead to 2-1 on Fiore's goal from in close with an assist from Chris Doyle (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) at the 4:13 mark. The goal was UMass' first shot of the game. However, UMBC would tally its second EMO goal of the game with just a minute to play in the quarter to take a 3-1 lead into the second quarter.

The Minutemen cut into the UMBC lead early in the second quarter when Kevin Leveille (Delmar, N.Y.) found the top corner of the cage at the 14:12 mark to trim the lead to 3-2, and then tied the game a minute later when Neil Lundberg (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) found the cage to knot the score at 3-3. UMass took its first lead of the game at the 8:47 mark when Glenz scored from close-range for a 4-3 advantage. Leveille talled his second goal of the game with another assist by Glenz at the 7:40 mark for a 5-3 cushion. Fiore tallied his second goal of the game at the 2:49 mark to increase the UMass lead to 6-3. Glenz pushed the lead to 7-3 with his second netter of the contest late in the half, but UMBC stopped the bleeding with a goal with just 10 seconds to play to cut the UMass halftime lead to 7-4.

UMBC opened the third period much the same way it started the game, cutting the lead to 7-6, while holding UMass to no offensive possessions in the first six minutes of the frame. UMass stopped the Retriever rally when Jeff Zywicki (Napean, Ontario) scored at the 7:51 mark off a beautiful feed from Leveille to push the lead back to 8-6. Doyle would tack on a late goal to give the Minutemen a 9-6 advantage heading into the final quarter.

Greg Cannella

UMBC scored on a man-down goal to cut the lead to 9-7 early in the fourth quarter, but Zywicki again pushed the lead to three goals with a netter at the 6:43 mark, this time an assist from Fiore for a 10-7 cushion. The Minutemen got a late Fiore goal and then ran out the clock for an 11-8 ECAC victory.

The Minutemen were outshot for the second straight game, 32-28, but Bill Schell (Mahopac, N.Y.) made 15 saves to hold off the Retrievers.
