D & Three Hat Tricks Topple Tigers

Banks reaches century mark; Aumiller sets record by scoring in 28th consecutive game

Virginia's Courtney Muller led all players with five ground balls while the Cavaliers' starting line defense and keeper combined for seven caused turnovers to help the Hoos upset the #2 Princeton Tigers 13-8 today in Charlottesville. Virginia (5-2) allowed the Tigers (1-2) only 15 shots en route to the win. At the other end of the field, Lauren Aumiller, Amy Appelt, and Cary Chasney each had a hat trick while Appelt added four assists for a seven-point game. Aumiller's first goal, a crease challenge 25 minutes into the game, allowed her to set the school record for consecutive games scored with 28, breaking the record she had shared with three other Cavaliers. Caitlin Banks also added a pair of goals, and her first one, also a goal circle challenge 14:24 into the game, marked her 100th career point with 61 career goals and 39 career assists.

Aumiller won the opening draw of the game and in the set attack charged to the cage and drew a double team before dumping the ball to Chasney who was on the goal circle. Chasney's goal gave Virginia an early lead, 1:19 into the game. Princeton answered with a Whitney Miller goal three minutes later to tie the game.

Morgan Thalenberg raced in and won the ensuing draw and the Cavaliers got the ball to Appelt, who rolled under her defender to put Virginia back on top less than a minute after the Tigers tied the game. Princeton, however, tied it right back up three minutes later.

That Hurts!

Andrea Pfeiffer made a save to start the next Cavalier scoring play, and in the transition Banks rolled around the goal circle and scored 14:24 into the game, marking her 100th career point in the process. Again the Tigers battled back to tie the score as Lindsey Biles scored with just over 10 minutes to play in the half.

Chasney caused a turnover and picked up the ground ball as she broke a Tiger clear in the midfield, and Virginia got the ball to Banks who fired a shot that was saved. Virginia's Tyler Leachman grubbed the ball and buried it in the net, giving Virginia a lead it would not relinquish with 6:04 to play in the half.

Leachman won the ensuing draw and the Cavaliers worked the ball behind the cage to Aumiller, who drove around the net and scored 25:06 into the game, thus setting a new Cavalier record.

Leachman also won the next draw and in the set Virginia spread attack, Aumiller was fouled at the top of the fan. She took the ball to the cage and scored 72 seconds after her first goal, giving the Hoos a three-goal lead at 6-3 that the teams took into the break.

The Cavaliers won the opening draw of the second half but the Tigers gained possession and worked the ball to their offensive end where Pfeiffer notched one of her team-high four caused turnovers, getting the ball back for the Hoos. Appelt brought the ball behind the cage and fed Aumiller as she streaked down the arc. Aumiller's goal 2:50 into the second half capped a 4-0 Virginia run that gave the Hoos a 7-3 lead. It also marked Aumiller's 34th career hat trick, tying her for the school record in career hat tricks set by Dawn Wisniewski from 1984-87. Princeton answered as Miller scored three minutes later.

Aumiller won the next draw to herself and Virginia got the ball to Banks, who drove in from the top of the fan and scored less than a minute after Princeton. The Tigers got possession of the ball but a long pass upfield was missed and Lauri Kenis ran the ball down behind her goal line and started the Cavalier transition that was completed as Appelt flipped the ball to Chasney who was in front of the cage. Chasney's goal gave the Cavaliers a five-goal lead with just over 22 minutes to play. Princeton's Theresa Sherry cut the deficit back to four five minutes later, but Chasney won the next draw to herself and worked the ball to Appelt, who fed Chasney who was on the goal circle. Chasney's goal with 16:13 to play moved the Virginia lead back to five. Princeton's Alex Fiore converted an 8-meter shot five minutes later, and Miller's long challenge 88 seconds later cut the deficit to three at 10-7 with 10:27 to play.

The Tigers held the ball in their offensive zone on the next possession but Aumiller caused a turnover in the arc and scooped up the ground ball to start the Virginia clear. In the Virginia offensive third, Chasney fed Appelt on the goal circle, pushing the margin back to four with 8:30 to play. Princeton's Fiore cut the deficit back to three on a long challenge, making the score 11-8 with seven minutes to play.

Appelt won the ensuing draw and rolled around the crease, scoring 45 seconds after Fiore to push the margin back to four. Meredith Lazarus won the next draw and the Cavaliers attempted to run out the clock. With Princeton keeper Sarah Kolodner out of the cage pressuring the ball, Appelt fed Courtney Young in the arc where Young scored with nine seconds left, accounting for the final score of 13-8.

Virginia improves to 5-2 on the year and returns to action on Saturday, March 22 as the Hoos travel to UNC for an ACC contest against the Tar Heels. The Tigers fall to 1-2 overall and head further south to take on the Blue Devils of Duke this Wednesday, March 19.
