The Duke University women's lacrosse team, ranked fourth in the IWLCA preseason poll, scored 11 unanswered goals in the second half to break open a tight contest and defeat host UMBC, 17-4, in the season opener for both teams. Freshman Michelle Menser registered four goals to lead the Blue Devils, while sophomore Katie Chrest and senior Corinne Broesler each registered a hat trick.

Duke never trailed in the game, as Chrest gave the visitors a 1-0 lead just 1:07 into the game. The Blue Devils extended the lead to 3-0 on goals by junior Katie Laschinger and Kristen Waagbo in the first 5:19 of the contest. Waagbo, a freshman attack, registered assists on the teams first two goals. UMBC got on the board as senior Jen Dragoni scored an unassisted goal at the 16:09 mark of the first half, and the game remained 3-1 at intermission.
Chrest tallied her second goal of the day 43 seconds after halftime and after a Dragoni goal, completed her hat trick minutes later to but the Blue Devils ahead, 5-2. Junior Kristy Dirks assisted on a Waagbo goal at the 33:54 mark, but the Retrievers recorded the next two goals to close the gap to 6-4 with 24:04 remaining.
Duke responded by ripping off an 11-0 run to close the game. Menser recorded four goals and an assist and Broesler added three markers during the final 24 minutes of play. Dirks scored a pair of goals, while defensive standouts Meghan Walters and Stefanie Sparks each collected a goal.
The Blue Devils asserted themselves on draw controls, winning 19 of 23 in the game, and kept constant pressure on the UMBC defense by taking 37 shots on goal. The Retrievers managed 17 shots, while grabbing just four draw controls.
Starting goalie Megan Huether made six saves, while allowing four goals and reserve Sheila Powenski stopped all four shots she saw in the Duke net. UMBC goalie Jena Goldstein registered 12 saves in just over 51 minutes of action.
Menser (4g, 1a), Chrest (3g, 2a) and Waagbo (2g, 3a) all scored five points for the Blue Devils. Broesler came off the Duke bench to score three goals and Dirks delivered two goals and one assist for Duke. Senior Lauren Kickham added a pair of assists in the win.
