Tigers Come Back to Defeat Hoyas

WASHINGTON, DC - Head coach Chris Sailer often says that when the Princeton women's lacrosse team needs a lift, senior captain Theresa Sherry usually provides it.

The fans at Georgetown's North Kehoe Field saw that first-hand on Friday afternoon. And the Tigers are still undefeated after their toughest test yet in 2004.

Sherry scored all three of her goals in a 1:49 span midway through the second half, turning a 5-4 Princeton deficit into a 7-5 Tiger lead, and Ingrid Goldberg added three goals and salted the game away with the ball in her stick in the final seconds as the top-ranked Tigers defeated No. 2 Georgetown, 9-7, in an early-season battle at the top of the women's lacrosse polls.

Sherry, who moved into fifth place all-time at Princeton with 134 career goals, was held to no goals and one shot in the first half as the Hoyas (5-1) took a 3-2 halftime lead. And when Catherine Elbe and Sarah Oliphant scored for Georgetown in the first five minutes of the second half, the Hoyas led 5-2. But Elizabeth Pillion and Lindsay Biles would score goals after that to pull the Tigers (7-0) within one before Sherry's string of three straight goals turned the tide.

"I just think we worked a lot harder and a lot better together in the second half," said Sherry, who leads the Tigers with 21 goals this season. "Everyone played better and that allowed me to take advantage of the opportunities I had to score."

Elizabeth Pillion had the assists on the first two Sherry goals, while Liza Hillenbrand had the assist on the third goal 30 seconds after the second one.

"In crunch time, I think we expect Theresa and Pills to step up like they did," said Sailer. "We were really struggling before halftime, but they made a huge difference for us when we needed it in the second half."

Princeton, which won its 16th straight game dating back to last season, also got huge contributions from Goldberg, a junior, who scored three goals Friday after entering the game with six career goals. She had both of Princeton's first-half scores, including one off a rebound with 2:55 left in the half that pulled the Tigers within 3-2 at halftime. The junior from Baltimore then scored the eventual game winner on a free-position shot with 9:02 left in the game, giving Princeton an 8-6 lead after Georgetown had pulled within 7-6 with 12 minutes left.

"I don't think about anything except finding the open space around the goalie and putting the ball there," said Goldberg, who also scored on a free-position shot in the first half. As a team, we showed a lot of character to come back and win the game."

Georgetown pulled within 9-7 on Oliphant's third goal with 3:11 left in the game, and maintained possession after that with three of Princeton's players on the bench with yellow cards, but goalie Sarah Kolodner (five saves) stopped Anouk Peters' shot with just more than a minute left to quell the final Hoya rally. Goldberg would then maintain possession in the Georgetown zone for the final 45 seconds before the final buzzer.

The Hoyas, who have now lost three straight to Princeton, scored the game's first two goals before Goldberg's first score pulled the Tigers within 2-1 with 13:49 on the first-half clock. Michi Ellers' goal with 12:10 left pulled the Hoyas within 7-6, but Goldberg and Biles then scored in a three-minute span to give the Tigers a three-goal lead.

Princeton outshot the Hoyas 25-19 and had 24 groundballs to just 16 for Georgetown. Georgetown's Sarah Robinson had 12 saves, including seven in the first half.

Biles scored twice for Princeton, while Pillion and Hillenbrand each had two assists. The Tigers improved to 6-4 all-time against the Hoyas.

Oliphant had three goals and two assists for Georgetown, while Elbe had two goals. The Hoyas scored just twice in the final 25:35 after scoring twice in a 1:21 span early in the half.

"It was a typical Princeton-Georgetown game," said Sailer, who was coaching against one of her former players, Hoya head coach Kim Simons '94. "It wasn't always pretty, especially in the first half, but we were fortunate to make big plays when we needed them."
