WASHINGTON, DC. – Senior midfielder Gloria Lozano (Pittsburgh, Pa./Sewickley) scored three goals and an assist to lead No. 2-ranked Georgetown University to a 13-6 victory over Rutgers University in BIG EAST women’s lacrosse action. The win improved the Hoyas’ BIG EAST record to 3-0 and their overall mark to 6-1. Rutgers falls to 0-2 in Conference play and 3-4 overall.
The Hoyas got on the scoreboard first when senior midfielder Anouk Peters (Ipswich, Mass./Millbrook) found the back of the net at 25:27 off an assist from Lozano. Rutgers responded with four-straight goals, including two by freshman midfielder Katie Batiuk, to take a 4-1 lead. Georgetown finally shook off some fatigue from playing two games in three days when Lozano picked up a ground ball in front of the cage and stuck it into the net at 12:14 to pull GU back to within two (4-2).
Georgetown’s defense stepped up to hold the Scarlet Knights scoreless the rest of the period, while freshman attacker Coco Stanwick (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) added to the Hoya totals after converting a free position shot with 58 seconds left in the period to make the score 4-3. Junior attacker Catherine Elbe (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) tied the game at 4-4 with just 3 seconds remaining in the half.
Georgetown reeled off four-straight goals in less than a four-minute period to take an 8-4 lead in the second stanza. Peters, Elbe, junior midfielder Lauryn Bernier (Stafford, Pa./Conestoga) and Lozano all contributed goals on the run, with Stanwick picking up the assist on Bernier’s goal. Rutgers’ scoring drought finally ended with Lindsay Rising posting an unassisted goal at 20:01 to make the score 8-5. The Hoyas went on a three-goal run with Stanwick, senior midfielder Michi Ellers (Swathmore, Pa./Strath Haven) and Lozano chipping in tallies. Junior attacker Sarah Oliphant (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) assisted on Stanwick’s goal, while Ellers and Lozano’s goals came off free position shots.
The Scarlet Knights scored once more, a goal by senior midfielder Maggie Bopp at the 14:16 mark, with the assist from Batiuk. Junior midfielder Ali Chambers (Valley Cottage, N.Y./Nyack) and Bernier closed out the scoring in the game to give the Hoyas a 13-6 victory. Chambers connected on a free position shot for her goal, while freshman midfielder Schuyler Sutton (Annapolis, Md./Severn School) set up Bernier for her goal.
Robinson had a solid day in goal for Georgetown. She ended the game with nine saves while allowing six goals. Junior Lyndsey Feldman and sophomore Jaclyn Greenbaum split time in the cage for Rutgers. Feldman posted six saves and gave up 12 goals, while Greenbaum rejected three GU shots and gave up one goal.
