Walters, Healy Lead Offense
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Nine different Terps scored as No. 2 Maryland topped Bucknell, 14-7, on Wednesday at the Lacrosse & Field Hockey Complex in College Park. Sophomores Joe Walters (Rochester, N.Y.) and Brendan Healy (Great Falls, Va.) led the way, as each tallied a hat trick. Walters piled up a career-high seven points including four assists in the win.
Maryland (4-0 overall) broke out to a 4-0 lead just 7:16 into the first quarter as Walters, Justin Smith (University Park, Md.), Michael Phipps (Severna Park, Md.) and Healy scored early. Walters set up Smith's and Healy's goals to begin his big day.
After Bucknell's Chris Cara -- the nation's leading scorer -- got Bucknell on the board 3:06 into the second period, Maryland reeled off three more goals coming from Ian Healy (Great Falls, Va.), Dave Matz (Woodstock, Vt.) and Smith for the 7-1 advantage. Ross Albers scored with 12 seconds in the first half for the 7-2 halftime margin.
Maryland's Walters came back for more to open the third with his second goal of the game followed by two more from sophomores Xander Ritz (Wayne, Pa.) and Bill McGlone (Swarthmore, Pa.).
The Terps entered the fourth with a 10-3 advantage. Brendan Healy then tallied back-to-back goals for his first career hat trick just 2:12 into the fourth followed by Walters' third of the day as Maryland took a 13-3 lead.
Bucknell (2-3 overall) scored four of the game's final five goals sandwiched around the first career goal for Maryland sophomore Bret Caretsky (Northport, N.Y.) with 8:04 left in regulation. Freshman Thomas Alford (Washington D.C.) was credited with his first career point with an assist on the goal.
The Terps' defense was top-notch again, as they held the an opponent scoreless in the first quarter for the second consecutive game. Maryland outscored Bucknell 3-2 in the second quarter and now has outscored opponents 19-4 in the second period through four games this season.
All-Americans Chris Passavia (Stony Brook, N.Y.) and Lee Zink (Rowayton, Conn.) combined for nine caused turnovers and seven groundballs. The nation's leading scorer, Cara, who came into the game with 25 points in four games (6.25 ppg) was limited to just one goal and two assists in the loss.
In goal, on St. Patrick's Day, Tim McGinnis (Ellicott City, Md.) made four saves, allowing just three goals, playing into the fourth quarter before giving way to freshman Harry Alford (Washington D.C.), who also made four saves.
On face-offs, the Terps had their best day of the young season, winning 14-of-24, led by senior Drew Virk (Ross, Calif.), who won 6-of-8. Sophomore David Tamberrino (Lutherville, Md.) also won six draws.
Bucknell's Brian Gargan scored two goals in his Maryland homecoming. Bison goalie Matt Baran was strong in net with 15 saves.
