Witzel's 5 Lead Tigers Over American, 16-13
Washington, D.C. - Freshman Shannon Witzel scored five goals and added two assists in just her second college game as the Tigers (2-0) came from behind to win a wild 16-13 contest over defending Patriot League champion American University (0-1) on Tuesday afternoon at Reeves Field.
In a game which featured nine ties and four lead changes, the Tigers had to rally from a 10-7 deficit to pull out the win. Rebecca Copeland, who scored five goals for the Eagles, tallied a goal with two seconds left in the first half, giving American a 9-7 lead at intermission. Just 2:10 into the second half, she scored again to give American its largest lead of the game at 10-7.
However, the Tigers came right back and scored three goals in less than a minute to tie the game at 10-10. Sophomore Kelly Fitzgerald started the rally as she scored an unassisted goal to make it a 10-8 game. Then, senior Caitlin Marshall scored two goals nine seconds apart to tie the game at 10-10. Witzel scored next to give the Tigers an 11-10 lead, their first advantage since the 21:50 mark of the first half.
American’s Moriah Linnell tied the game again at 22:08. Just 59 seconds later, Courtney Bennett scored for the Eagles, but it was the last lead AU would hold as Towson scored the final three goals of the game. Marshall's third goal of the game, with 3:03 remaining, gave the Tigers the lead they would never relinquish. With 1:25 left, sophomore Becky Trumbo scored her fourth goal of the game off a pass from Witzel for a 15-13 Tigers lead. Witzel's free position goal with two seconds left clinched the win for the Tigers.
