The Colorado Mammoth defeated the Vancouver Ravens, 13-12, in an overtime thriller at GM Place in Vancouver. John Wilson scored the game-winner on an assist from Gary Gait to secure the victory for Colorado, who now owns sole possession of first place in the Western Division with a 3-1 record.

The game had been billed as a homecoming for lacrosse superstar, Colorado Mammoth team captain Gary Gait. But it was local boy John Wilson who stole the show, and the game, with a Mammoth game-winning goal in overtime.

With 3:46 left in overtime, Wilson’s game winner gave the Mammoth the win, a claim to the Western Division lead, and a league-leading best 3-1 record.

“This was an important win for us as we begin our homestand in Denver,” said Steve Govett, Colorado Mammoth general manager. “We had some great effort from a number of guys and we couldn’t have asked for more from our goaltending.”

Among the night’s big numbers were Gavin Prout’s four goals, Ben Prepchuk’s hat trick, and Gee Nash’s 31 first-half saves.

Prepchuk started the night’s scoring with a Mammoth goal 52 seconds into the game on assists from Gait and Jay Jalbert. Gait and Wilson assisted as Brian Langtry scored for the Mammoth on the power play.

Prout would begin his scoring streak on assists from Shawn Cable and Dave Stilley, to end the first quarter with the Mammoth up 3-2.

The Ravens seemed to find momentum in the second quarter with a four-goal effort. Jalbert would score the Mammoth’s only two goals of the second quarter, his first on an assist from Jamie Hanford and his second on assists from Josh Simms and Stilley. The half ended with the Ravens leading 6-5.

The Mammoth regained the lead with a pair of goals from Prout – one unassisted and one assisted by Cable and Nash. Wilson would score on assists from Prepchuk and Prout. Scott Stapleford took assists from Gait and Langtry for the fourth Mammoth goal of the quarter.

Prepchuk added a pair of goals in the fourth quarter – one assisted by Langtry and Wilson, and assisted by Prout and Langtry on the other. Prout added a fourth goal of the night, this time assisted by Langtry. Still, a four-goal fourth-quarter rally by the Ravens sent the game into overtime.

Wilson’s goal ended the game in front of an announced crowd of 6,554.

While Sunday may have been homecoming for Gait and Wilson, it was as much a a homecoming for the Ravens’ Curt Malawsky. Traded by Rochester earlier this week, the British Columbia native turned in a standout performance for the Ravens with four goals and three assists. Dan Stroup added a hat-trick for the Ravens.

Nash ended the game with 45 saves for the Mammoth and Hanford was 18 for 28 on the face-off.

The game was the second of the weekend for Vancouver to go into overtime; the Ravens defeated Buffalo on Friday in overtime at GM Place. The Ravens (1-3) take on the Toronto Rock at the Air Canada Centre on Friday, while Colorado hosts the Arizona Sting on Sunday.
