Delaware Overpowers Mt. St. Mary’s

BALTIMORE - Sophomore Jordan Hall scored a career-high four goals and dished out two assists and sophomore Cam Howard dished out a career-high five assists as the University of Delaware overpowered Mt. St. Mary’s in the second half for a 15-7 non-league men’s lacrosse victory Wednesday afternoon at Boy’s Latin High School.

The game, originally scheduled to be played March 7 on the Mt. St. Mary’s campus in Emmitsburg, MD, was moved to McDaniel College in Westminster, MD due to wet field conditions. Snow forced the cancellation of the game Tuesday and the contest was moved to Boy’s Latin High School.

Delaware (3-2) snapped a two-game losing streak as the Hens outshot the Mountaineers 42-23, gained a 38-25 advantage on groundballs, and won 18 of 26 faceoffs led by Alex Smith.

The victory was the 400th in school history for Delaware, which is playing in its 58th season since 1948 this year. The Hens are now unbeaten in eight all-time meetings with Mt. St. Mary’s.

Hall, who posted his seventh career game with two or more goals, led the way for the Hens, who also got the five assists from Howard. Andy Hipple added three goals and an assist while Dan Deckelbaum, Vincent Giordano, and Dave Powers all scored twice. Senior Joe Trentzsch also added a goal, marking the eighth straight game he has scored dating back to last season.

Mt. St. Mary’s, which was playing its season opener, got two goals and an assist from Billy Jautze while Tilghman Herring scored twice and Eric Seifert added a goal and an assist.

Jautze scored the game’s first goal just 55 seconds into the game to give the Mount a 1-0 lead. Delaware got on the board on a goal by Hipple 43 seconds later to tie it and the Hens scored three more goals before the end of the quarter to take the lead for good.

Jautze scored his second goal of the game with 5:42 left before halftime to cut the margin to 6-4, but Hall scored for the Hens with 4:49 left before intermission to give Delaware a 7-4 lead. Jason Werner opened the second half with a goal for Mt. St. Mary’s two and a half minutes in to cut the lead to 7-5, but the Hens reeled off four straight goals, including two by Hall, to put the game away.
