The English National Team handed Mount St. Mary's a 12-4 loss in men's lacrosse action at Alumni Field on Thursday afternoon in an exhibition game. Mark Reynolds scored four goals to lead England to the victory.
The Mount started strong scoring twice in the opening five minutes. Freshman Geery Grant opened the scoring with an unassisted goal 3:41 into the game. Mount senior Matt Warner followed with a behind-the-back goal on assist from Jason Werner to stake the Mount to a 2-0 advantage. England fought back with three straight goals to close out the first quarter. Dave Bryant and Steve Shanahan scored to tie the game anad Andrew Backell's goal at the buzzer on an assist from Reynolds gave England a 3-2 advantage. The Mount's Dave Orban tied the game 1:05 into the second quarter, but England took over from there, scoring nine straight goals to seal the win. Reynolds, Bryant and Tom Gosnay each connected in the second quarter to give England a 6-3 advantage at the half. In the third quarter, England goalkeeper Ben McAllister kept his team in the lead making six of his game-high 11 saves in the period. Reynolds provided the offense, sandwiching a pair of goals around a Gosnay marker to give England a 9-3 advantage after three quarters. Reynolds, Gosnay and Bryant added scores in the fourth quarter before a late Mount goal by Joe Bello closed out the scoring. Reynolds finished with four goals while Bryant and Gosnay each scored three times for England. McAllister finished with 11 saves while Joe Zolezzi had six saves in the first half for the Mount and Chris Channing four saves in the second half. England outshot Mount St. Mary's 34-22 in the game. The game was played using international rules which include a running clock of 20-minute periods. The English National Team is in the midst of a six-game trip to the United State having already played Rutgers, Villanova and Drexel with games against Towson and Loyola remaining. From MSM release.
