Bryant and King net hat tricks in GMU Victory

FAIRFAX, Va. - Patriot junior attacker Sarah Bryant (Fairfax Station, Va.) scored a hat trick as did freshman attacker Laura King (Springfield, Pa.), who posted all three of her goals in the second half, as George Mason downed visiting No. 20 Delaware 11-8 Sunday afternoon in women's lacrosse at George Mason Stadium.

Mason (4-7), which is off to its best mark in the CAA since 2002 at 3-1, led 6-5 at the break and out scored the Fightin' Blue Hens (5-5, 2-3 CAA) 5-3 in the second period for the win. After the Patriots took an 8-5 lead off King's free position shot at 22:20, Delaware ran off three unanswered goals to tie the match 8-8 with 12:31 remaining in the game.

Bryant's unassisted marker at 11:09 put the Patriots back on top by one at 9-8, and King rattled off two more scores in the final 10 minutes. The Patriot defensive unit of sophomores Melissa Curry (Edgewater, Md.) and Katie Linnertz (Syracuse, N.Y.), junior Michele Brady (Fairfax, Va.) and senior Amanda Thornburg (Springfield, Va.) held the Hens scoreless over the final 12:31 to preserve the victory.

Mason held a 3-2 advantage with 23:42 on the clock in the first period and tallied three straight goals over the next 15 minutes to stake a 6-2 margin with eight minutes left in stanza. Delaware, however, closed the half with three consecutive scores as they trailed by one at halftime.

The Patriots' Bryant also had an assist in the contest. Freshman midfielder Alex Velesz (Woodbridge, Va.) and senior midfielder Brandi Evans (Fort Howard, Md.) each had two goals for Mason. Freshman attacker Christina Frank (Forest Hill, Md.) also scored and had an assist. After a poor shooting night on Friday, Mason responded well against Delaware as nine of the Patriots 11 goals were either assisted or off free position shots.

Midfielder Katie Muth (Ellicott City, Md.) and freshman Casey McCrudden (Voorhees, N.J.) led the Hens with three goals each. McCrudden also posted an assist. Senior Erin Edell (Glenelg, Md.) and freshman Katie Hogan (Farmingdale, N.Y.) each had one goal.

In the net, George Mason senior Meg Dentler (Crofton, Md.) finished with 15 saves and allowed eight goals, while Delaware junior Patrice Hughes (Springfield, Pa.) stopped 13 shots and allowed 11 markers.
