HAVERFORD UPSETS HAMPDEN-SYDNEY
COLLEGE PARK, MD - Ben Reedís goal with 3:26 to play snapped an eight-all tie and gave Haverford College a 9-8 upset victory over ninth-ranked Hampden-Sydney College Wednesday night in a neutral site matchup in College Park, MD. With the win, Haverford improves to 3-1, while the Tigers fall to 2-1.
Hampden-Sydney built a 5-2 lead by the 11:26 mark of the third quarter before Haverford exploded with six straight goals over a 10:52 span that gave the Fords an 8-5 lead heading into the final stanza. The Tigers rallied off a pair of Eamon Thornton (Atlanta, GA/McCallie) goals, along with a Ryan Harrington (Dallas, TX/Plano) blast as the team tied the contest with 5:02 left to play. Reedís goal at the 3:26 mark proved to be the game-winner as the Tigers came up empty in their effort to tie the contest.
Hampden-Sydney built is three goal lead thanks to five different goal scorers. After Ben Polak put the Fords on the board in the opening minute of the game, the Tigers came back with four straight goals as Harrington, Michael Via (Virginia Beach, VA/Norfolk Academy), Thomas Jennings (Murfreesboro, TN/Webb School) and Sean McChesney (Charlottesville, VA/St. Anneís-Belfield) each found the back of the net.
Haverfordís Patrick Barry halted the Tiger burst just before halftime with a man-up goal at the 4:51 mark of the second quarter, making the score 4-2 in favor of H-SC. Mark Miller (Esmont, VA/Monticello) recorded his first collegiate goal to kick things off for the Tigers in the second half as he took a Michael Via assist and deposited it in the net with 11:26 to play in the quarter.
However, the Tigers would not score again until the fourth period, while Haverford took off on its six-goal tear, led by Mike Distler who scored two and assisted on a third, while Joe Mauri, John Magovern, Derek Leif, and Neil Gordon also scored goals en route to giving the Fords an 8-5 advantage.
Overall, Hampden-Sydney out-shot Haverford, 33-20, and collected ten more ground balls, 36-26. In the goal, Hampden-Sydney senior keeper Jeremy Bull (Raleigh, NC/Ravenscroft) recorded eight saves, while Haverfordís K.C. Peterson made nine.
