Terps Knock Off Tigers, 13-12 In OT

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Brooke Richards rolled around the right side of the crease and fired a shot on a tough angle past the Princeton goalie to give Maryland a 13-12 overtime win over the Tigers.

"This was just a terrific game between two programs that have a lot of history and a lot of respect for each other," head coach Cindy Timchal said as her team improved to 11-6 on the year. "There were times that we had to dig deep, and we responded to every challenge along the way."

Richards scored five points on three goals and two assists to lead the Terps. Katie Doolittle scored a pair of goals and added an assist and added a game-high six draw controls. Kelly Kasper and Krista Pellizzi also contributed three points for Maryland. Casey Magor took most of the draws for the Terps, controlling four herself to go with a pair of goals. Delia Cox had four points on two goals and two assists as well as a game-high six ground balls.

The Terps held a 10-7 lead with 16 minutes left in the game, but Princeton scored three unanswered in regulation, including two from Katie Lewis-Lamonica, to send the game into overtime. Princeton goalie Sarah Kolodner made a save on Maryland's Katie Doolittle as time expired to keep the game knotted at 10-10.

Doolittle came up with the opening draw in overtime, but the Terps promptly turned the ball over. Lewis-Lamonica scored her fifth goal of the night on a strong move to the cage at 1:39 in the first overtime. The Terps quickly answered, though, after Richards connected on a pass to Doolittle with 50 seconds after the Tiger goal. Kolodner made a save on Delia Cox shot with 25 seconds left, and Princeton raced down the field and Kathleen Miller was able to draw and convert on an 8-meter shot with three seconds on the clock to give Princeton a 12-11 advantage.

Cox opened the second overtime period by winning the draw and then finding Casey Magor for a goal just 23 seconds into the second overtime. Neither team was able to manage a shot the rest of the way as the game moved to sudden victory overtime periods.

Princeton controlled the ball in the third three-minute period, but the Terps had a good look at the goal as time expired. Magor fired a shot high that was collected by Richards and threaded a pass to Delia Cox in front of the net. Kolodner, though, was again there to stop the shot as the overtime period ended.

Doolittle opened the next overtime period with her game-high sixth draw control of the day. After a Jessica Dorney shot missed to the right, Richards worked behind the net. She rolled to the right and got the game-winer past Kolodner with 2:13 on the clock to snap Maryland's three-game losing streak to Princeton.

The Terps won all seven of the draw controls in the overtime periods and finished with a 16-13 advantage in that category. Prior to the overtimes, the Tigers had the edge in draws at 13-9.

The Terps held a 4-2 lead with 10:32 left, but Princeton closed the first half with four straight goals to take a 6-4 halftime lead. The Terps came out aggressive, though, responding for six of the game's next seven goals for the 10-7 lead before the Tigers responded.

For the Tigers, Kolodner made 12 saves in addition to forcing three turnovers and having four ground balls. Lewis-Lamonica finished the game with a game-high five goals.

Miles made eight saves on the night, including two on free-position shots. The Terp defense held Princeton's leading scorer to just one goal and one assist on the night.

While Princeton was without one of its top players in Elizabeth Pillion, Maryland was forced to play without leading scorer Annie Collins and Acacia Walker who are each nursing injuries.
