BAYHAWKS STARTING A RECORD 2005
Baltimore, MD (June 15, 2005) - Early season statistics portray quite a successful start to the 2005 season for the Baltimore Bayhawks. In just 3 games played, the Bayhawks lead the MLL in every team category besides a tie with the Long Island Lizards and Boston Cannons for the two-point goals against category. ![]() The Bayhawks early season performance has also allowed several Bayhawks players to be listed among the MLL's league leaders. Attackman Gary Gait is tied for the league lead with the Boston Cannons’ Mark Millon and Kevin Leveille in goals scored, all with 11. Also in the top ten for this category are Tom Marechek, Mikey Powell and Jeff Sonke. The Bayhawks are also strongly represented on the MLL top ten list of points-scorers for the season. Tom Marechek’s 16 points is one point behind the leader, Boston's Mark Millon. Mikey Powell, Gary Gait and Mark Frye also rank in the top ten for this category. Midfielders Mark Frye and Dave Curry are currently ranked first and second (respectively) for two-point goals on the season. Mikey Powell, Tom Marechek, Gary Gait, Jeff Sonke and Josh Sims are all tied for second for hat tricks on the season. In the goal, first year Bayhawk Trevor Tierney ranks second in wins on the season, with 2. ![]() If that isn't enough, the Bayhawks had a record setting victory against the Philadelphia Barrage last Sunday. Leading off the scoring at 13:43 in the first quarter, Josh Sims had his first goal on a feed from Tom Marechek. The Bayhawk's goals kept coming, finishing off the Barrage with a 31-9 win. The 31 points, 28 goals, and the 19 assists on those scores set new MLL all-time team records. In addition, the Bayhawks eclipsed their own margin of victory record, which they set last week against the New Jersey Pride, with a 22-point win over the Barrage. ![]() Several Bayhawks also set new career highs against the Barrage. Bud Light MVP Tom Marechek set a new career high for points in a game with 9, (5 goals, 4 assists). In his third week of MLL play, Mikey Powell also set a career high in points with 4 goals and 3 assists. Finishing off the starting attack line was Gary Gait who had a new career high in goals per game with 6. Gait also extended his streak of consecutive games with a goal to 31 games. Mark Frye also tied his career high in 2-pointers in a game with 2. ![]() The Bayhawks will be looking to further their record-setting ways on Saturday against the Rattlers in Rochester. June 12, 2005 - The Baltimore Bayhawks plowed past the Philadelphia Barrage for a record-breaking win in front of 3,543 fans at Johnny Unitas Stadium in Towson, Md. Baltimore M Josh Sims put the Bayhawks on the board first with a goal on an assist from A Tom Marechek followed by an unassisted score from M Paul Cantabene. Bayhawks A Mickey Powell continued the early scoring streak with a goal, assisted by A Tom Marechek, and D Danny Cocchi notched another Bayhawks goal on an assist from player/coach A Gary Gait. With Baltimore up four goals to none, M David Curry slammed in a two-point goal off an assist from M Drew Pfarr, ensuring a six-goal lead against the Barrage midway through the first quarter. Baltimore M Josh Sims earned his second goal of the first half quarter with 9:57 remaining on the clock on an assist from A Mikey Powell. Philadelphia M Matt Striebel battled through traffic to put the first Barrage point on the board with 7:01 remaining in the quarter, leaving the Barrage down six points. Minutes later Baltimore M Gavin Prout countered with another Bayhawks goal off a pass from A Mikey Powell for his second assist of the quarter. M Josh Sims drove in hard to the goal for his third goal of the quarter again assisted by A Tom Marechek putting the Bayhawks up 9-1. With less than two minutes remaining in the quarter, Baltimore M Gavin Prout and Philadelphia D Brian Spallina received matching penalties for unsportsmanlike conduct to conclude the first quarter. ![]() Baltimore carried the scoring momentum into the second quarter by keeping the pressure on Barrage G Brian Dougherty. A Tom Marechek notched his first and second goals of the game within a minute of each other, the first coming with 11:21 remaining in the half on an assist by M Drew Pfarr, and the second score off a pass from M Mark Frye. A Mickey Powell extended Baltimore’s lead to 12-1 on a goal assisted by M Josh Sims with 9:39 left on the clock. A Gary Gait earned his first goal of the game from an assist by the high-scoring A Tom Marechek with 9:23 remaining in the half. Barrage A Michael Springer notched an unassisted goal with 6:36 left to diminish Baltimore’s lead to 13-2. Fellow Barrage teammate M Matt Striebel followed with another unassisted Philadelphia goal and a second goal driven past Baltimore G Trevor Tierney off an assist from A Ryan Boyle with 2:24 remaining in the first half. Bayhawk A Tom Marechek, with an assist from A Mikey Powell, put up his third goal of the quarter putting Baltimore ahead of Philadelphia 14-4. With under a minute remaining, Philadelphia was forced into a goalie switch after Brian Dougherty went down in front of the goal, leaving G Todd Schreiner in for the remainder of the game. At the conclusion to the first half, Baltimore showed 14 goals to Philadelphia’s four, reminiscent of the first half score a week earlier in the New Jersey/ Baltimore match up on June 5th at Towson University. ![]() The third quarter opened with Baltimore continuing to pressure the Philadelphia goalies, this time with G Todd Shreiner in net. Bayhawk D Danny Cocchi was guilty of slashing shortly into the second quarter, but M Jeff Sonke was still able to improve Baltimore’s tally 15 goals to Philadelphia’s four off an assist from M David Curry. Barrage A BJ Prager retaliated with an unassisted score of his own leaving Philadelphia behind by 10 points. Baltimore A Tom Marechek found the net for his fourth goal of the game off a feed from A Gary Gait putting Baltimore ahead 16-5. Barrage M Chris Rogler received a flag for unnecessary roughing nearly midway through the quarter and Bayhawks A Gary Gait took advantage of the power play to score another Baltimore goal with the help of M Josh Sims. With the power play goal, Gait extended his streak of goals scored to 31 consecutive games. The third quarter was also full of penalties from both sides and after the Barrage penalty expired, Baltimore M Paul Cantabene was called for a one-minute holding penalty. Philadelphia later followed up with a score by A Doug Knight from A Ryan Boyle to hold the score at 17-6 with Baltimore still in the lead. Bayhawks M Jeff Sonke countered the Barrage goal with an unassisted score putting Baltimore back ahead by 12 goals with 4:29 remaining. A Gary Gait continued to put more points on the board for the Bayhawks with a goal off an assist from M Gavin Prout holding the score 19-6 in Baltimore’s favor. With 15 seconds remaining in the third quarter, A Mikey Powell found the back of the net on an unassisted diving score around Barrage G Todd Schreiner. The score at the conclusion to the third quarter left Baltimore ahead 20-7 over Philadelphia. ![]() The fourth quarter was filled with more scoring action by the Bayhawks. A Gary Gait led off the quarter with two unassisted goals, the second goal the result of an amazing behind the back shot. A Tom Marechek followed with his own incredible over the shoulder shot into the net to put Baltimore up 23-7. A Matt Alrich also notched his first career goal off an assist from M Gavin Prout and A Mikey Powell followed up with an unbelievable running dive into traffic to score Baltimore’s 25th goal of the game. With 9:34 remaining in the game, M Mark Frye found his way to the net for a two-point goal putting the Bayhawks up 27-7. M Dave Curry notched his second goal of the game with 8:08 remaining in the game but Barrage M Michael Mollet countered for a Philadelphia score with 5:40 remaining on the clock. A Gary Gait continued the Baltimore offensive attack with his sixth goal of the game off an assist from M Paul Cantabene, putting Baltimore ahead by 21 points. Philadelphia had one final attempt to put points on the board with a goal by A BJ Prager off a pass from M Doug Shanahan. The final goal of the game came as a two-point score off a hard shot from M Mark Frye from M Jeff Sonke. The final score, 31-9 in favor of Baltimore, broke numerous MLL scoring records. Baltimore set the new margin of victory at 22 points, improving upon their record-breaking 16-point margin of victory in the home opener against New Jersey. The Bayhawks’ 31 points against the Barrage broke the MLL record for points in a game, previously held at 29, and the record for all-time goals scored in a game, previously 27, was broken by Baltimore’s 28 goals today. The Bayhawks’ 31 points is also the new record for most points scored by a MLL team in league history. The Bayhawks will meet the Rochester Rattlers in Rochester on June 18 before returning to Johnny Unitas Stadium on Sunday, June 26. ![]() BAYHAWKS RUN OVER PRIDE IN HOME OPENER
June 6, 2005 - The Baltimore Bayhawks opened their home season this afternoon at Johnny Unitas Stadium in Towson, MD in front of 4234 fans. Baltimore started a 14-goal first half with an unassisted score by M Mark Frye, still hot from a 5-goal game in Seattle the previous week, with 9:54 remaining in the first quarter. A Mikey Powell made his presence noted with a behind the back, no-look pass across the New Jersey goal to fellow Syracuse alumnus, A Gary Gait which came up empty. The Bayhawks continued their scoring streak with a goal by M Drew Pfarr, assisted by M Dave Curry. M Gavin Prout attempted to up Baltimore’s lead to three but was guilty of a shot clock violation, turning the ball over to the Pride. With 4:42 left in the first quarter M Walid Hajj put New Jersey on the board with a score under the stick of Baltimore G Trevor Tierney. M Josh Sims topped off the scoring in the first quarter with an unassisted goal past New Jersey G Scott Schroeder leaving Baltimore in the lead three goals to New Jersey’s one. ![]() The Pride’s Andy Corno opened the second quarter with a face-off win over M Paul Cantabene. Bayhawks G Trevor Tierney faced an increased number of shots from the Pride in the second quarter with a hard shot from M Peter Vlahkis which Tierney deflected, followed by a shot from Pride attackman Scott Urick which Tierney scooped up immediately. The Bayhawks were also the first to score in the second half with an unassisted goal from M Josh Sims, his second of the game, with 13:28 left in the first half. A Mikey Powell found his way to the net for his first goal of the game through traffic and past Pride G Scott Schroeder. D Danny Cocchi received the only flag of the first half for a tripping call with 11:06 left in the half. New Bayhawk D Brodie Merrill notched his first goal in the MLL and Baltimore increasing the lead to 6-1, Baltimore. Later in the half M Josh Sims raced to the Pride goal, but fell to the ground while M Mark Frye scooped up the loose ball for another Bayhawks score. Baltimore lost a little steam in the next face-off as M Paul Cantabene was guilty of an illegal position and sacrificed the face-off to New Jersey. M Jeff Sonke made it 8-1 with 7:33 left and M Gavin Prout upped the score 9-1 with 5:54 left in the first half. A Mikey Powell made it 10-1 with a running shot in from behind the goal, but the Pride responded with a goal by M Adam Doneger. Towards the conclusion of the half Bayhawks’ G Tierney lost the ball and New Jersey M Austin Garrison notched a goal for the Pride leaving the tally 10-3 with Baltimore still in the lead. Baltimore M Dave Curry exploded with a two-point score helping the Bayhawks to a 12-3 lead. M Josh Sims and A Tom Marechek both scored near the end of the half with Marachek’s goal assisted by M Jeff Sonke. The Pride concluded the scoring in the first half with a second goal from M Austin Garrison to finish the half with Baltimore at 14 points and New Jersey with four. ![]() Baltimore M Gavin Prout started the second half off with a goal, increasing Baltimore’s lead to 15-4. Up next A Mikey Powell notched his second goal of the game off an assist from A Gary Gait. New Jersey received their first flag of the game at 6:57 in the third quarter when Pride D Ryan McClay pushed Baltimore A Mikey Powell during a fast break by Powell. M Dave Curry found the New Jersey net on a diving score with 4:53 remaining in the third quarter. M Paul Cantabene went down in the third quarter for the only injury in the game. New Jersey followed the interruption with a two-goal rally with the first score from M Rob Torti, assisted by A Liam Banks and then by A Michael Lamonica leaving the score 16-6 with Baltimore still in the lead. M Dave Curry made an attempt at a rally with a 2 pt. shot effort with M Josh Sims ready to scoop up the ground ball for the final score of the third period. The Bayhawks finished the quarter leading 17-6. ![]() New Jersey stepped up to begin the fourth-quarter scoring with a goal from D David Stilley. Baltimore M Jeff Sonke responded on a goal with an assist from A Tom Marechek leaving the score at 17-7. Player-coach Gary Gait notched his first goal of the game with 11:52 remaining in the quarter off an assist from M Drew Pfarr. With 9:06 remaining A Mikey Powell tallied his third goal of the game while diving across the crease. In the final nine minutes of the match Baltimore G Trevor Tierney made an amazing save, denying the Pride a chance at a score. The Bayhawks went on a scoring spree with A Tom Marechek notching two unanswered goals leaving Baltimore ahead 22-7. D Brodie Merrill found the net again for his second score with the Bayhawks and M Jeff Sonke concluded the Bayhawks’ scoring with his third goal of the game. New Jersey went down fighting with the final score by M Dan Chemotti. ![]() The final game score was 24-8 which is the largest margin of victory in MLL history (previously 15 goals, set in August of 2003). M Dave Curry finished the game with six points as the MVP against his former team as well as a notable first win for G Trevor Tierney, 12 saves, against his former teammates.
