Lions Hold Off St. Andrews in Final Minute

BROOKLYNVILLE, MD - The Molloy College Lions (1-1) picked up their first win of the season this afternoon, 13-12 over St. Andrews Presbyterian College (4-3). Molloy's Kevin Meekins (Levittown, NY) scored the eventual game-winner at the five-minute mark. The Lions defense and goalie Joe Labella (Massapequa, NY) held St. Andrews scoreless in the final two minutes to win the game.

James Sampson (Massapequa, NY) opened the scoring for Molloy at the 11:33 mark of the first quarter. St. Andrews struck back with three straight goals to give them a 3-1 lead with 7:54 to play. The Lions then tied the game on consecutive goals by Dom Toscano (Plainedge, NY) and Mike Zabielski (Baldwin, NY). St. Andrews took another two-goal lead, but Toscano cut the deficit to one on a goal scored with 1:40 to play to make the score 5-4 at the end of the first quarter. The Lions controlled the second quarter, outscoring St. Andrews 3-1 to take a 7-6 lead into the break. Pat Aiello (Massapequa, NY), Toscano and Brian Himberger (New Hyde Park, NY) each scored in the second frame. Molloy went 5-7 on man-up situations and Labella made 10 first half saves.

The third quarter was back and forth as St. Andrews immediately tied the game. Molloy took a two-goal lead after goals by Toscano and Sampson, but St. Andrews came right back and tied the game at 9-9 with 6:44 to play. The Lions then regained their two-goal cushion on goals by Steve Maier (Farmingdale, NY) and Rob Meier (Seaford, NY), taking an 11-9 lead into the final quarter. It took St. Andrews less than four minutes to tie the game at 11-11 in the fourth. The game remained tied until the 6:20 mark, when Tim Harrington (North Babylon, NY) scored to give Molloy the lead. Meekins then scored at the five-minute mark to make the score 13-11 Lions. St. Andrews drew within one at 2:18, but Molloy played incredible defense down the stretch and held St. Andrews to just two shots on their final possession.

Toscano finished the game with four goals and an assist for five points. Maier had a goal and four assists, while Zabielski had a goal and three assists. Labella ended the game with 18 saves. Zabielski also led Molloy with eight ground balls. Cole Howell led St. Andrews with two goals and two assists for four points.
