Philadelphia is set to welcome the 2005 NCAA Men's Lacrosse Championships this weekend! You can still get tickets, hotel rooms etc. If you are serious about lacrosse, it's time you made the pilgrimage to lax mecca - the NCAA final four weekend!

The field has been set for all three divisions of college lacrosse. In Division I, undefeated No. 1 seed Johns Hopkins, Duke, Virginia and Maryland will be competing in the national semifinals on Saturday, May 28 and the winners will face off on Monday, May 30. In Division II, defending champion Limestone and New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) will square off in the championship game on Sunday, May 29, while the Division III title game will consist of two-time defending champion Salisbury against Middlebury.

In 2003, the Division I championship game drew 37,944 fans the largest crowd to witness any NCAA Championship event other than Division I men's basketball. The Philadelphia Sports Congress estimates that the annual economic impact for the City of Philadelphia could reach $25 million.

The 2005 NCAA Lacrosse Championships will be the first NCAA championship event held at Lincoln Financial Field which opened in 2003. The 2003 NCAA Championship was played in a professional sports facility for the first time Baltimore's M & T Bank Stadium. Attendance records were set for each session of the weekend, with total attendance reaching 108,790 for the three-day event. The first college lacrosse game was played at Lincoln Financial Field on May 7, 2005 when Penn hosted Maryland.

The tournament has been played in Philadelphia two times before - 1973 and 1992 with Franklin Field serving as the site. Both times, the NCAA Final went to double overtime, with Maryland defeating Johns Hopkins 10-9 in 1973 and Princeton capturing its first title with a 10-9 win over Syracuse in 1992.

Major media coverage has also helped the expansion of the championships as ESPN2 (semifinals) and ESPN (final) have provided live game broadcasts of the Division I action since 1995. For the second-straight year, CSTV will be broadcasting the Division II and III Championship games live as well.

Ticket sales are approaching 35,000 for the weekend, and tickets can be purchased through Ticketmaster.

The University of Pennsylvania Athletic Department will serve as the host institution for the 2005 NCAA Men's Lacrosse Championships in conjunction with the Philadelphia Eagles and the Philadelphia Sports Congress this weekend (May 28-30) at Lincoln Financial Field. The NCAA Men's Lacrosse Championship has become one of the largest championships that the NCAA sponsors on an annual basis.

Marrakesh, 517 South Leithgow Street, 925-5929, www.south-street.com/microsites/marrakesh; open daily for dinner only.  One of the East Coast’s premier Moroccan restaurants, established in 1977, family owned and operated.  Guests lounge on rug covered banquets, surrounded by colorful pillows in dimly lit, incense-scented rooms and relaxing background music.

Monte Carlo Living Room, 150 South Street, 925-2220.   Offers old-fashioned dining with an elegant lounge and the cuisines of southern France and Italy.

Old Original Bookbinders Restaurant, 125 Walnut Street, 925-7027; dinner daily.  This celebrated Philadelphia seafood restaurant reopened this year after substantial renovations.

Pagoda Noodle Café, 125 Sansom Walkway (next to the Ritz East movie theater), 928-2320, lunch & dinner daily.  An inexpensive café that serves Hong Kong-style dishes and offers nine kinds of noodles.

Red Sky Restaurant & Lounge, 224 Market Street, 925-8080, www.redskylounge.com; open for dinner daily.  The décor features a glowing red ceiling floating 25 feet overhead and an iridescent lime green floor.  The food is New American with an all-chocolate dessert menu!

Ristorante Panorama at Penn’s View Hotel, 14 North Front Street, 922-7600 or 922-7800, www.pennsviewhotel.com; lunch (Monday-Friday) & dinner (daily).  Features authentic Italian cuisine, and wine lovers around the world have heard the praise of the dramatic "il bar," which features the world's largest wine dispensing system.  Decanter Magazine once described Ristorante Panorama as having the "best wine-by-the-glass program in North America."

A Philly cheesesteak consists of a big helping of grilled sliced beef served hot on a large roll and topped with cheese and sometimes onions.  Most food vendors that you see on sidewalks around town sell cheesesteaks, as well as Philadelphia hoagies (known elsewhere as grinders, heros, sub sandwiches, submarines, etc.), soft pretzels, scrapple, and other local treats.  These are three of the most well-known places to get an authentic Philly cheesesteak.
