HANOVER, N.H. -- The Dartmouth College women's lacrosse team continued its hot
play, defeating Penn State University, 11-9, on Chase Field in a Monday
matinee.
The 12th-ranked Big Green improved to 4-1 and won its fourth in a row
since losing the season opener to defending NCAA champion Maryland. 11th-ranked
Penn State fell to 5-5.
The Lady Lions took an early lead when Jen Johnson converted a free
position goal two minutes in, but Dartmouth got a pair of goals from sophomore
Jacque Weitzel and another from Jen Greene to take a 3-1 lead.
After PSU's Julie Tice and Dartmouth's Emily Fenwick traded goals, the
Lady Lions drew level when Johnson netted her second and third of the day in a
52-second span. However, the Big Green came right back with two goals in the
final 26 seconds of the half to take a 6-4 lead into the break.
Emily Mechem drew Penn State within one in the third minute of the
second half, and then Weitzel and Cheryl Videon traded goals in the fifth
minute. The two teams then went scoreless for more than 15 minutes, before
Colleen O'Brien converted a feed from Videon to tie the game at 7-7 with
exactly 10 minutes to play.
Weitzel notched her fourth goal of the game 37 seconds later, but it
was matched by Jill Kaden's free position effort with 7:26 to play.
However, Dartmouth took the lead for good with 6:46 to play when
Melissa Frazier stole the ball in the Penn State backfield and raced in
uncontested for the goal. Just 10 seconds later, Weitzel sprung Julia Morrill
for a breakaway goal and the Big Green moved on to victory.
Penn State came within one when Videon scored her second of the day,
but a minute later Kate Graw rebounded her own shot and beat Penn State goalie
Lauren Retzlaff to close out the scoring.
Sarah Carlson came up with 12 saves in the Dartmouth goal, while
Retzlaff made nine stops.
