WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Junior All-American attackman Greg McCavera
(Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) notched two goals and two assists to lead
the 10th-ranked Georgetown men's lacrosse team to a 9-7 victory over
12th-ranked Navy on Saturday, March 28, at Harbin Field. With the win,
the Hoyas snap a two-game losing streak and improve to 4-2 on the
season, while the Midshipmen fall to 5-3.
In addition to McCavera, senior All-American midfielder Greg
Hubschmann (Short Hills, N.J./Delbarton) tallied two goals and one
assist, while senior midfielder Greg Peters (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace
Greeley) posted a pair of goals. Georgetown's defense also played a
big part in the win as the Hoyas held Navy scoreless for a 31:14 span
from the second quarter to the fourth period.
Georgetown held the Mids scoreless for the final 9:51 of the
second quarter and all of the third stanza. Navy finally broke the drought
with 8:37 to play in the fourth quarter. The Midshipmen scored four
goals in the final 8:37 of the game.
Navy was led by junior attackmen J.L. Reppert and Jamie
O'Leary, who both scored a pair of goals and Reppert added an assist
as well. Senior midfielders Mike Newton and Scott Meushaw added a
goal and an assist apiece.
The Hoyas got on the scoreboard first as Hubschmann scored an
unassisted goal midway through the opening period. Navy's Gilroy
scored an extra-man goal off a feed from Meushaw at the 6:39 mark to
knot the game at 1-1. Peters scored unassisted 2:12 into the second
period to give the Hoyas a 2-1 advantage. Just seven seconds later,
Reppert scored off a feed from junior attackman Alex Borcz to tie the
game at 2-2. O'Leary's unassisted goal at the 9:51 mark gave the
Midshipmen their only lead of the game.
Only 40 seconds after O'Leary's
goal, McCavera tallied his first of the game to knot the score at 3-3.
McCavera put Georgetown ahead for good at the 8:00 mark of
the third quarter with his second goal of the game. Sophomore
attackman Andy Flick (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) put the Hoyas up 5-3
with 6:31 remaining in the third quarter with a goal off a feed from
McCavera. Hubschmann opened the fourth stanza with a goal at the
13:37 mark to increase the Hoya lead to 6-3. Junior midfielder Tyler
Gamble (New Canaan, Conn./Westminster) then scored a
man-down goal off a pass from McCavera with 8:52 to play to increase
the GU lead to 7-3.
Navy finally ended its 31:14 scoreless span at the
8:37 mark of the final stanza on an extra-man goal by O'Leary. The
Hoyas responded to the Navy goal with one by junior attackman Scott
Urick (Fairfax, Va./Robinson) off a feed from senior midfielder Mike
Corry (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk) with 6:41 left to play. With 4:26 on
the clock, Reppert scored an extra-man goal off a feed from Newton to
make the score 8-5. Peters responded with his second tally of the game
to push the Georgetown advantage four, 9-5. Newton brought Navy
within three, 9-6, with a goal just 16 seconds after Peter's. Meushaw
closed out the scoring with an extra-man goal with 36 seconds to play
off a feed from Reppert to make the final score 9-7.
Junior Brian Hole (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) made
13 saves in goal for the Hoyas while allowing seven goals. Navy
sophomore Mickey Jarboe notched 13 saves in goal and gave up nine
goals. Navy held a 37-31 edge in shots on goal, while the Hoyas won
the battle of groundballs 37-35. Georgetown held a 11-9 edge in
face-offs as well.
The Hoyas return to action on Wednesday, April 1, when they
travel to Bethlehem, Pa., to play Lehigh at 3:30 p.m.
