WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Junior All-American attackman Greg McCavera
scored four goals and added an assist, while sophomore attackman
Andy Flick added four goals to lead sixth-ranked Georgetown to a 15-7
win over 14th-ranked Army in collegiate men's lacrosse action at Harbin
Field on Saturday, March 7. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 2-0,
while Army falls to 2-1 on the season.
In addition to McCavera and Flick, junior midfielder Tyler Gamble
tallied a pair of goals, while senior midfielder Mike Corry notched a
game-high three assists to go along with a goal. Senior All-American
midfielder Greg Hubschmann added one goal and two assists. The
Cadets were led by junior attackman Rob Lewis and freshman midfielder
Steve Austin, who notched a pair of goals apiece.
The Hoyas led 2-1 after the first quarter, but exploded for five
goals in the second stanza while holding Army to a single goal, to take a
7-2 halftime advantage. Georgetown added five more goals in the third
period to extend its lead to 12-4 and put the game out of reach.
Hubschmann opened the scoring in the game with an unassisted
goal 2:54 into the contest. The Black Knights, on a extra-man goal by
senior midfielder Greg Tily off a feed from senior midfielder Dan
Monahan, tied the score with 3:29 left in the first quarter. McCavera's
first goal of the game with 2:35 left in the quarter, gave the Hoyas the
lead for good, 2-1. It was also the first of six-consecutive Georgetown
goals. Flick and Gamble scored back-to-back goals to open the second
quarter and give the Hoyas a 4-1 lead. McCavera registered the assist
on Gamble's goal. McCavera then notched goals at the 8:05 and 7:14
marks to increase the GU lead to 6-1. Gamble scored the six-straight
goal with 1:52 left in the first half. Lewis stopped the Hoya run with an
unassisted goal with 54 seconds remaining in the opening half.
Georgetown began the third quarter with four-consecutive goals
to take an 11-2 advantage midway through the period. The Hoyas
opened the scoring seven seconds into the third quarter with an
extra-man goal by Flick off a feed from junior attackman Scott Urick.
Urick, Flick and junior attackman Peter Velepec rounded out the run
with goals with Velepec's a nifty behind-the-back shot. An extra-man
goal by Lewis with 4:17 left in the third quarter stopped the run and make
the score 11-3. Army sophomore midfielder Zach Russo and GU senior
midfielder Brian Price traded goals before the Cadets' Chad Hadlock
rounded out the scoring in the third quarter. The Hoyas took a 12-5 lead
into the final stanza and added to that advantage on Flick's fourth goal of
the game and Corry's first. Austin scored Army's seventh and final goal
of the game with 7:11 to play and McCavera's fourth goal of the game at
the 5:11 mark made the final score 15-7.
Junior Brian Hole made nine saves in goal for the Hoyas while
allowing seven goals. Junior Kevin O'Brien played the final four
minutes, notching three saves. Army senior Lou Kousouris made 10
saves in goal. The Hoyas held a 45-25 advantage in shots on goal and a
43-25 edge in groundballs.
