In a Battle of Top 10s Georgetown Downs Delaware 11-5

Washington, D.C. – Georgetown’s eighth-ranked men’s lacrosse program (3-1) built a 5-0 lead early in the second quarter and cruised to an 11-5 victory against ninth-ranked Delaware, handing the Blue Hens their first loss of the season (7-1). The Hoya defense pitched a first quarter shutout in front of 1,033 fans at GU’s Multi-Sport Field.

Midfielder Dave Paolisso (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial), the reigning ECAC Co-Offensive Player of the Week, recorded his second consecutive hat trick for Georgetown. Pete Cannon (Haverford, Pa./The Haverford School) and Trevor Casey (Bethesda, Md./Georgetown Prep) were also multiple goal scorers for the Hoyas, netting two apiece. Delaware was led by Cam Howard, who had two goals.

The first half was highlighted by stellar play from Georgetown’s defense. The Hoyas held the Blue Hens to just one goal in the first 30 minutes, the fourth and fifth times this season the defense has limited an opponent to one goal or less in a quarter. Leading the charge defensively were Reyn Garnett (Mt. Kisco, N.Y./Deerfield Academy), Jerry Lambe (North Massapequa, N.Y./Farmingdale) and Craig Stevenson (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca), who helped limit Delaware to just five shots in the first half.

Hoya sophomore Scott Kahoe (Villanova, Pa./Radnor) opened the game’s scoring three minutes into the game. Pete Cannon and Paolisso then tallied back to back goals to extend the Hoya lead to 3-0. The second quarter started with Hoya freshman Jake Samperton (Bethesda, Md./Landon) netting his first career score off an assist from Brendan Cannon (Haverford, Pa./The Haverford School). Paolisso then built the lead to 5-0 before Chris Hichborn broke the Delaware scoring drought. GU’s Brendan Cannon marked with under one minute to play, closing out the first half’s scoring with Georgetown up 6-1.

In the second half Georgetown built its lead to 8-1 six minutes in as Casey netted his first of the day off a helper from Matt McBride (Ridgewood, N.J./Delbarton) and then Pete Cannon scored unassisted. Delaware sandwiched goals around another Casey score and at the end of the third GU owned a 9-3 advantage. The Hoyas and Blue Hens traded goals twice in the fourth quarter with GU’s Paolisso hitting his third of the game and Andrew Baird (Baltimore, Md./Loyola Blakefield) notching his third of the year.

Georgetown sophomore goalie Miles Kass (Rye, N.Y./Hotchkiss) made five saves on the day, while allowing five goals and Delaware’s Tommy Scherr stopped 15 stops and allowed all 11 of GU’s scores. The Hoyas outshot Delaware 46 to 19 and had 40 ground balls compared to 35 for Delaware. Georgetown face-off specialist Christiaan Trunz (Manhasset, N.Y./Chaminade) won 7-of-17 against one of the nation’s best in UD’s Alex Smith and for the game, the Hoyas won 8-of-20.
